Music in the Operating Room
Music improves surgical outcomes
Amazed & Amused – Turn Up the Tunes in the Operating
Room
Karyn Buxman, RN, MSN, CSP, CPAE
British researchers have found that patients listening to
Frank Sinatra during surgical procedures performed under local anesthesia
reported less anxiety, have lower respiratory rates and appear to heal faster
than patients having similar procedures in a music-free setting. The
small-scale study was published in the Annals of Royal College of Surgeons.
In 1984 I created my first tape for playing in the Operating Room specifically for
patients using earphones and putting the tape player on repeat.
I have, since then, created two intra-op CDs one for Moderate Sedation Patients and
one for General Anesthesia Patients.
The music was created by a CRNA using my specifications with a biorhythmic beat and
a hypnogogic Theta Tone to entrain the brain to create a very relaxed state.
My CDs have been used in 100’s of hospitals and by individuals to decrease
anxiety, pain, nausea and vomiting and time in the post anesthesia unit.
These CDs worked so well that I also added in the 80’s Preparing for Surgery and
Preparing for Dental CDS. My latest is a 5 minute pre surgical stress reduction CD that can be listened to after the patient gets to the hospital in the waiting room and the holding area.
Research on my products done by the Navy and Air Force are positive for less nausea and vomiting, less pain and rapid recovery.
