Hypnosis in the Holding Area for Anesthesia

I used some techniques today in the OR for the first time.  I had a patient that had an anxiety disorder and was visibly nervous about the procedure and the IV.  She brought a stuffed bear to hold the whole time.  I told her to think of garden hoses in her right arm.  I then had her take a few proper deep breaths and she closed her eyes on her own.  I asked her to then think about the stuffed bear in her other hand.  To pay attention to the texture and feel of it while picturing what it looked like in her hand.  I had the IV in quickly and she showed no signs of discomfort and stated that she did not feel it.  The rest of the procedure went very well.  Mathew
