Change Your Mind – Change Your Brain – Change Your Behavior 5 (3)

When you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.

How can our beliefs change our behaviors?

Bruce Lipton, Ph.D., professor at Wisconsin University and Stanford University Schools of Medicine, pioneered stem cell research in the 1960’s.  His research asserts living beings are not machines run by biochemicals and DNA. In his book Biology of Belief, he states “What we now know is that our entire biology is shaped by the intelligence of each of our fifty trillion cells.  And the single most important way to influence them is through the energy of our beliefs.”

With this in mind we must explore our own thoughts and how they shape who we are and who we become.  What we know from his research is that we were programmed starting five months before we were born by the energy of our parent’s thoughts and our surroundings.  The stresses, the happiness, the fears and the worries they had were programmed into us.

We continued to be affected by outside environmental signals until the age of six and continuing to a lesser degree until the age of nine.  So in actuality we are today in attitude and personality what we learned before birth and until the age of nine.  We were programmed like computers or recorded on like a cassette tape so that we just keep playing the same programs over and over.  Unless we change the recording, we cannot change the behavior.

For example, you may have a fear of snakes because one or both of your parents was afraid of snakes. Imagine yourself as a child with a parent playing in the back yard. Now imagine seeing a snake in the grass. Your parent screams “Snake!”  The parent grabs your hand and jerks you into the house.  You were just taught that snakes are something to be feared.  However, when your parent sees the snake and says, “look there is a snake in the yard” and explains that some snakes are harmless and that others are dangerous, perhaps you would have a respect for snakes but not associate them with fear.

The most amazing thing discovered by Dr. Lipton is that any behavior we have acquired in the computer brain or cassette tape of the mind can be re-recorded or “written over.”  However, the only way that can be achieved is while someone is in the Alpha or Theta brain-wave frequency, which is actually the frequency we are in all the time until the age of six and Alpha until the age of around nine. Therefore, if we can only record over behaviors in the Alpha or Theta brain wave frequency, how do we do it?

Simple – either by meditating or practicing self-hypnosis. Both involve Alpha and Theta brain wave states.  Therefore, if you allow yourself to see new possibilities while in a hypnotic state you begin to change or rewire the brain.  When you rewire the brain, the chemicals produced by the brain send new messages to the cells which change the cells response which changes the behavior.  The reason most people have trouble making the changes they want is because they live as if today were yesterday. They continue to carry around the baggage from the past.  When I teach people how to use self-hypnosis I instruct them to “see yourself, not as you are, but as you want to be…, as if you have already achieved your goal and imagine it in a realistic and believable manner.”

You can make changes in your life by changing your thoughts. Your thoughts change your brain activity. When your brain activity changes, so does your behavior.

Factors That Influence Hypnotizability 5 (1)

Factors That Influence Hypnotizability

If rapport is the fuel that is necessary to make hypnosis run, suggestion is the motor. You can put the motor in many different chassis, but you still need a motor to run that chassis, and you will definitely need fuel to make the motor run. The better the fuel, the better the motor will run.

Emile Coué in his book My Method explains his belief that delivering effective suggestions was all that was needed to bring about change. He abandoned the notion of the hypnotic session as we know it in favor of going straight for the suggestion.  As he dispensed medications he would also dispense positive suggestion as to the efficacy of the medication. He noticed that patients who received both medication and positive suggestion did better than patients who received the medication alone. Coué also instructed patients to repeat a number of times each night before going to sleep, “Every day, in every way, I am getting better and better.” This statement is the basis for the Silva Mind Control program for self-improvement.

A more modern example is The Amazing Kreskin. Kreskin, who prefers to call himself a “mentalist” rather than a hypnotist, bypasses most of the trappings associated with traditional hypnotism. Through his keen ability to build instant rapport and his remarkable delivery, he has demonstrated to millions that people can do amazing things merely through suggestion.

The art of suggestion is the art of communicating with the subconscious mind. The effective formulation and application of suggestion requires a basic understanding of the operation of the mind and subconscious discussed earlier in the chapter on the Brain.

Rapport

Rapport is one of the most important skills in interpersonal interactions. The concept of rapport is based on the notion that people like people who are like themselves and dislike people who are dislike themselves. When a person likes someone, they are much more likely to work with that person.

So, how do we establish rapport with someone? There are half a dozen key elements in establishing rapport. They are essentially the goal behaviors that will allow you to be more like the other person.

The first goal is physically mirroring the subject. The idea is to copy, even if subtly, the subject’s posture, gestures, expressions and other movements. You do not have to be right on top of the person’s movements or cross your arms the second he or she crosses their arms. You should delay for a moment, and copy their posture, etc.  After you pace the other person’s movements and posture for a while you can lead them.  Try changing your posture and see if the other person follows. This is one way to check and see if you have established rapport.

The second goal is to match the subject’s breathing. You can either pace someone’s breathing by matching your breath to theirs or you can also do things like tap a foot in time with their breath. As with physical mirroring, after you pace the person’s breathing for a while you can then begin to lead.

The third goal is to determine the subject’s primary representational system and present information in the same way.  As you pace the person’s representational system you can lead them into other representational systems. When you lead a subject into a different representational system you effectively lead them into an altered state of consciousness.

The fourth goal is to match the subject’s voice. This includes volume, tone, tempo, and the timbre (texture) of their voice.

The fifth goal is to match the size and quality of the pieces of information the person presents. Persons who deal with large less detailed pieces of information will become frustrated when presented with smaller, more detailed pieces of information. Conversely, a person who handles information in small detailed pieces will quickly become bored with someone who presents large general pieces of information.

Finally, common experience is the glue that binds us together. If we can relate to a person’s experiences, beliefs, values and interests and show we have some commonality with them they are more likely to feel a bond to us. For some the ability to build rapport seems to come naturally and almost magically. The rest of us need to practice.

Metaphor Protective Ants by Havens and Walters 4.7 (18)

PROTECTIVE ANTS:  (Adapted from Ronald A. Havens and Catherine Walters, Hypnotherapy Scripts, page 132)

Hypnosis and its ability to enhance the immune system by decreasing stress is evidenced based by the NIH. Specific hypnosis suggestion to increase the immune system is the foundation of the script Protective Ants. Supercharge the Immune System using this imaginative script.

There is a tree in Africa that has a special relationship with a particular kind of ant.  The ants spend their entire lives living on that tree.  They build their nests out of its leaves, they only drink the particular kind of sap that tree produces and secretes and eat the special tiny berries it grows.  They never leave that tree because that tree provides everything they need.

And this type of ant is the only insect that does live on that tree.  Whenever any other insect begins to crawl upon it or lands on one of its leaves, the ant sentries send out an alarm and all the other ants come running.  They attack those foreign bodies and either destroy them or drive them away and, in this way they protect that tree from any invaders that might attack it or even destroy them or drive them away and in this way they protect the tree from invaders that might attack it or destroy it.  They save the tree and the tree saves them.

There are many other examples of the same thing throughout the world, where one tiny creature protects a large one from dangerous invaders.  And in each and every case they always seem to have a way of paying very close attention to anything that could be harmful so that they know immediately if something is wrong, and they know what is wrong and they pay close attention to it so they can do something about it, to eliminate it or fix it.

We have within our bodies an immune system that functions much like the ants who take care of that tree, automatically and continuously, rushing to do those things needed to heal and protect.

As the ants protect the tree, your body’s immunity and healing capabilities are working rapidly to bring healing to your body.  This is already working in your body, because you want it to work…and your subconscious mind is cooperating with your conscious desire to be healthy and strong.  Your entire organism is responding and your health continues to improve.

And all of those processes function by receiving directions from your subconscious mind…Thus, the more positive your subconscious mind is programmed, the healthier your body becomes…That’s one of the reasons it is so important for you to develop a positive,, loving attitude about yourself…

So, each day your self-confidence, your self-acceptance, and your self-esteem will keep increasing, and you continue realizing more and more your own self-worth.

William James, the well-known psychologist, wrote, “The greatest discovery of my generation is that human beings, by changing the inner attitudes of their minds, can change the outer aspects of their lives.”

Bernie S. Siegal, M.D. said, “My own day-to-day clinical experience has convinced me that the state of mind changes the state of the body by working through the central nervous system, the endocrine system and the immune system…Peace of mind sends the body a ‘live’ message.  Thus, all healing is scientific, even though science can’t yet explain exactly how the unexpected occurs.”

That is backed up by a statement in the Bible that says, “You can be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”  By properly using your mind, you can have a good effect on your health.

Now just allow your subconscious mind to cause you to relax more peacefully and calmly.  As you relax, you allow your body to keep improving physically.  The organs, glands and normal functions of the body begin  to work properly.

As you feel better about yourself, you eat the foods that are right for your body.  You eat foods that cause your body to be healthy and strong.  You exercise according to what your doctor suggests for you.  Exercise helps you reduce the effect of stress on your body and improves your health.

As you relax, your subconscious mind is giving direction to each cell of your body to function in unison and harmony with other cells to eliminate harmful cells by your natural body processes to bring healing to your body.

Imagine and visualize your body healthy.  The wise old man of Proverbs said, “Whatsoever a person thinks in his/her heart, so is he/she.”  The images you hold in your mind you tend to become.

As you relax and use your imagination, you increase your natural body healing chemicals and endorphins which bring healing and comfort to your body.

You are learning to use your mind and imagination along with proper medical care to bring healing to your body.
