Reduce Pain Through Mindfulness Meditation 0 (0)

Scientists discover non-opioid pain pathway in the brain

Study provides evidence for the existence of a non-opioid process in the brain to reduce pain through mindfulness meditation.

  1. Results from a new study, funded in part by the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health, demonstrate that mindfulness meditation works on a different pain pathway in the brain than opioid pain relievers. The researchers noted that because opioid and non-opioid mechanisms of pain relief interact synergistically, the results of this study suggest that combining mindfulness-based and pharmacologic/nonpharmacologic pain-relieving approaches that rely on opioid signaling may be particularly effective in treating pain. Previous research has shown that mindfulness meditation helps relieve pain, but researchers have been unclear about how the practice induces pain relief — specifically, if meditation is associated with the release of naturally occurring opiates.
  2. Researchers recorded pain reports in 78 healthy adults during meditation or a non-meditation control in response to painful heat stimuli and intravenous administration of the opioid antagonist naloxone (a drug that blocks the transmission of opioid activity) or placebo saline. Participants were randomized to one of four treatment groups: 1) meditation plus naloxone; 2) control plus naloxone; 3) meditation plus saline; or 4) control plus saline. People in the control groups were instructed to “close your eyes and relax until the end of the experiment.”
  3. The researchers found that participants who meditated during saline administration had significantly lower pain intensity and unpleasantness ratings compared to those who did not meditate while receiving saline. Importantly, data from the meditation plus naloxone group showed that naloxone did not block meditation’s pain-relieving effects. No significant differences in reductions of pain intensity or pain unpleasantness were seen between the meditation plus naloxone and the meditation plus saline groups. Participants who meditated during naloxone administration also had significantly greater reductions in pain intensity and unpleasantness than the control groups.
  4. The study, conducted by researchers at Wake Forest School of Medicine and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center, was published in The Journal of Neuroscience.

Trichotillomania 0 (0)

Ron,
I have two referrals from Psychiatrists:
One is for

Trichotillomania which, as you know, has to do with anxiety and depression. I have researched several reference books including Hammond, Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis, Medical Hypnosis by Walberg and approximately 10 other books I have and the internet. What other morbidity coexist to create this compulsion?

The client has already contacted me and is aware that hypnosis is the only way she can quit and her husband is behind her.

Would you please help by pointing me in the right direction and I’ll take it from there…
Thank You,

Trichotillomania
Female, 33 years old and has pulled her hair for as long as she can remember. She can remember when she was about 5 pulling her hair when her mother was twirling her own hair while sitting on the couch. Her mother has pulled hair but very rarely, primarily a twirler. She will pull eyelashes occasionally if loose and out of place and eyebrow as well.

The hair pulling has become progressively worse over the years and she pulls many at a time now versus at the beginning, the one hair she pulled had to be course and have a particular texture. She has never smoked or drank alcohol. 2 Children by C-Section and refused pain medication other than the local given.

I have not done a complete intake yet and she’s working on scheduling appointments as not to conflict with work as much as possible.
I hope this helps.
Thank You,

My Comments
Well, Bruce this should be fun. I mean that in an interesting way. Start with why she thinks hypnosis is the only thing that w3ill help and why she is coming for hypnosis at this time after all these years.

Five points:
1. Ask her to write down three things she want you to say to her.
2. Do regression to the before the hair pulling started.
3. Have her to talk to her subconscious mind and ask if the autonomic nervous system has a reason for pulling the hair and will it consider slowing down or stopping?
4. Ask her what will change in her life when she stops pulling her hair. Be sure she comes up with something.
5. Direct suggestion You are an adult – it is OK to let go of childish things. As a child we do what we see our parents do, as you did with your mother. You are a responsible adult with children of your own. You will stop when you decide and set a good example for your children.
Watch the bleep video scenes 9&10 so she can see how her mind is working.

CRPS and Children 0 (0)

My comments to a mother who has a child diagnosed with CRPS.  (Notice I said DIAGNOSED not has CRPS)

Some things about working with children that we need to discuss which has to be considered:

  • How much her condition is being reinforced by family, friends and physicians
  • Children love attention and subconsciously may not be able to tell negative from positive attention – it is just attention
  • There is always a reward involved with every behavior – finding her reward or discovering a bigger reward is a big part of recovery.
  • CRPS is called complex because there is no reason for it so it is complexing to the medical mind that can’t see beyond physical treatment.

A simple statement from you, asking, “are you in pain?” Hurting or how do you feel today is a trigger for the brain to create and be reinforced with a learned response.

I leave you with this thought – There is no pain until the electrical impulse reaches the brain. In the brain the emotions of past experiences are filtered by the Thalamus gland and relayed to other glands that then determine the response. In your daughters case “pain”.

Here is a comment from a past CRPS diagnosed client

Hi Lena and Ron,

I hope you are both doing well. I wanted to follow up with what has happened sense I have been home. First of all thank you so very much for the Hung by the Tongue book. I love it and have enjoyed reading it. I am doing great! I have started tapering off my medications. I am completely off of narcotic pain medication and that feels so good. I have also started physical therapy and that is going great as well. My life is completely different from before I came to Clinton. I feel like I got my life back and I am so excited and optimistic about my future.  I am settling into my new routine well.  I do relaxation/hypnosis 2-4 hours a day and I love it. It keeps getting better everyday. I have been able to share what I have learned with so many people close to me. Sorry if you get a lot of injuries. Many were amazed by the results, like I still am. Many of my friends and family have started using your apps and love it. I am hoping to come back in April to get trained let me know if it is sooner. Thank you for all you do! I can never explain just how thankful and appreciate My family and I are for all that you have done. I feel so blessed and forever thankful! Coming to Healthy Visions saved my life!

Meeting the Pain Client’s Needs – Clinical Hypnosis and HypnoAnesthesia for Pain Management Part 1 of 2 0 (0)

Hypnosis and HypnoAnesthesia for pain Management Part 1 of 2
M. Ron Eslinger, RN, CRNA, APN, MA, BCH, CMI, OB, FNGH

Meeting the Client’s Needs – Personalizing the Pain Treatment Plan.

Clinical hypnosis and HypnoAnathesia are key components for pain management and control. This article is about personalizing direct suggestions, metaphors, and stories to the client’s history and expectations. The intake sheet, NGH BASIC, NGH GOAL and what the client tells you is critical in developing a personalized session that has lasting effect. If you are a script reader, you will be surprised at how much better your clients will do when you listen during the interview or actually do an interview. Doing so will allow you to create a script that is personal and life-changing for your client.

When I retired from the Navy and opened my hypnosis practice in Oak Ridge, Tennessee (the Secret City). One of the first things I did was call and make an appointment with two hypnotists listed in Knoxville, Tennessee. My first appointment was with a registered nurse with a degree in psychology. It took me three phone calls to find her home office. Once I arrived at her home, I could not get out of the car because two German Shepherds would now let me out of the car. She, the hypnotist, came and escorted me, to what she called the mother-in-law’s room, which had an outside entrance. Her interview consisted of two questions. One, what is your name? Two, what do you want hypnosis for? I told her my name and that I had just retired and did not want to procrastinate in finding a job.

She said lay down over there and look at the flowers on the wall. What she told me to lie down on, was a short and narrow bench that she called the couch. The flowers look like 30-year-old dried-up roses, probably from her wedding. I did not ask. She sit down in a squeaky, wooden, antique desk chair. And pulled out her book (which I own) and said let me see what I can find for you. The title of the book is Hypnotherapy Scripts: a Neo – Ericksonian Approach to Persuasive Healing by Ronald A. Havens and Catherine Walters. A book I highly recommend.

Halfway through the hypnosis, as I continue to be concerned about falling off of that small couch, those two large German Shepherds broke through the French doors and were staring me in the face! It was an interesting session. I did survive both the hypnosis and the dogs.
I learned a lot that day. I learned about what other hypnotists in the area were doing which if you haven’t done that you truly should integrate investment in your education and in your own well-being.

My major take away was the fact that there was no interview. She knew nothing about me. And that there was absolutely nothing in her hypnosis that was personal for me.

Second hypnosis session in the beginning:
It only took me two phone calls to find my second hypnotist, a Yoga Master. My fault, I was looking for a hypnotist office. The room he did hypnosis in was very sterile with a simple straight-backed chair across the room from a picture which I still too this day cannot describe, other than to say that it was a black and white geometric something. I was told to sit in the chair and to stare at the picture.
For the second time, I was only asked, what is your name, and what are you here for? I gave him the same answer. He did at least give a good explanation of what hypnosis was and how it worked, and what I could expect, almost. For the next hour, I sat very uncomfortably throughout the longest progressive relaxation induction in my entire life. It was painful. Again I learned a lot about how I was going to work with my clients both interactively and personally.

Did hypnosis work? Of course, I retired in December. I had two sessions of hypnosis in December. I open my practice in December two weeks before Christmas. That was in 2003.

Are you ready to personalize your sessions for client success? Only you can make the decision to study, train and learn how to be a successful clinical hypnotist personalizing the client’s sessions to their personality type.
Here is an example of an August 2015 graduate using client personalization skills. “I just wanted to thank you for putting on a great course. I learned a lot from you especially in the application of techniques. I was pleasantly surprised to be working with a weight loss client the other night and after I emerged her she gave me a great piece of info to use so I quickly re-induced her and developed a metaphor that I am confident was very powerful for her as it was so personal.” Nick Hill
He used a great technique of using what is learned in the debrief or post-hypnosis interview to simply let the client re-enter hypnosis at which time he gave her a metaphor with suggestions specific to what she was willing to share because of hypnosis. Do not let these opportunities get lost.

The following is a follow-up email from my July 2015 Complex Regional Pain Syndrome (CRPS) client who I saw for a sixteen-hour intensive treatment over a five day period.

“I wanted to follow up with what has happen since I have been home. First of all, thank you so very much for the Hung by the Tongue book. I love it and have enjoyed reading it.” (I spend time every session teaching the importance of positive self-talk. Hung by the Tongue was chosen because of her faith to personalize to her lifestyle.) “I am doing great! It keeps getting better every day. I have been able to share what I have learned with so many people close to me. Sorry, if you get a lot of inquiries. Many were amazed by the results like I still am. Many of my friends and family have started using your apps and love it. I am hoping to come back in April to get trained let me know if it is sooner. Thank you for all you do! I can never explain just how thankful and appreciative my family and I are for all that you have done. I feel so blessed and forever thankful! Coming to Healthy Visions saved my life!”

You can also visit my blog https://roneslinger.com/category/hypnosiscasereports/ to read an article written by another client diagnosed with CRPS, which was published in the Journal of Hypnotism.

Hypnosis resolves a number of different ailments, including problems developed from past experiences, trauma, or habits. This large spectrum results in a wide variety of clients as well. While the application of hypnosis may be similar, the needs of a client or a patient may vary greatly. While you gather information on the client’s problems and motivations during the initial visit or encounter, also listen for hints regarding their personal needs. We have one fiscal needs which is for survival, and for psychological needs which include love, power, fun, and freedom. A good hypnotist is always paying attention to how the client’s pain effects each of these five needs.
Clients possess a variety of religious and spiritual needs as was displayed in the CRPS client above and my reason for not only giving her a book based on biblical quotes, but also actually reading quotes from the book and then explaining how those quotes related to her personally. How did I know what to say? I conducted a good interview and listened to what the client said.

The client’s religious, psychological and personal needs are used during hypnosis to help them cope with stress, fear and anxiety. Their personal needs also solidify their motivation and expectation toward making life changes. For you, the hypnotist, it is important that you do not pass judgment on an individual’s belief system, regardless of what that system is.

I use a number of techniques to personalize the hypnosis session to the client. I will list a few and how I use them:
A technique I starting using 3 years ago is one I learned at the NGH conference from Ruth Schneider and David Prudhomme, in their Stressed to Best training. I later completed the certification training. The value is learning the personality type of the client with a quick and easy survey. In the course I learned which words are key words to the client, this makes it easy for me to develop direct suggestions and metaphors related to the client’s personality type.

Examples of key words of a recent client. Spontaneous, possibilities, noticeable and expected, and limitless are only a few of that client’s personality type key word list.

I may suggest to the client. I wonder if you have ever been spontaneous. Meaning, did you do something without making plans or even wondering what the outcome may be? Would you be willing to be spontaneous now by changing your thinking from how you are, to how you would like to be? Just forgetting about the past and letting a healing present happen. Your healing thoughts create a healing response.
Think of all the limitless possibilities that are available to you, and each day as you become more and more comfortable those possibilities become more noticeable those possibilities that are actually limitless are there waiting for you. Sometimes those possibilities can be spontaneous other times they can be planned but most of all they are determined by your willingness to expect to achieve those limitless possibilities of comfortable competence.

There is a TV show called Big Brother and its motto is to, Expect the Unexpected. Isn’t it amazing though, how your doctors have continuously created your expectation of having to live with your pain? You will have it for the rest of your life. They created your expectation, and because they are the authority we accept that suggestion. Are you willing now to change their expectation of you to that which is unexpected by them. Consider your possibilities which are limitless in your ability to spontaneously and comfortably create a new expectation by simply changing your thoughts, rewiring your brain, and creating the expectation of comfort for the rest of your life.
Simple metaphorical techniques for changing pain to comfort can be found in movies, fairy tales, and quotes. How would you personalize the following examples for your clients?

Quote from Abraham Lincoln – “You are only as happy as you make up your mind to be.”

Quote from Howard Hilton Hill, radio commentator – “Every day is a brand-new day, it is a day that has never been lived before. It is a blank canvas. You can create your masterpiece.”

Movie – the Wizard of Oz. Do you know the story? Do you know the moral? This is one of the most powerful stories that I use to change your clients thinking in order to rewire the brain say no to the pain.

Aesop’s Fables, Have you ever read them? You may be surprised at the metaphors available that you can personalize for your clients.
All of my pain clients and most other clients watch certain scenes from the video, What in the Bleep… do We Know?

Hypnotists has Colonoscopy 0 (0)

Hi Ron,

I listened to a recording your teleseminar on Thursday night and I wanted to reach out to you today.

In that seminar you threw down a challenge to all Hypnotists to practice their craft on themselves. I had never had the opportunity to do that in the 7 years that I have been practicing. As it happens I was scheduled for a colonoscopy yesterday morning, and even though I had previously announced that I intended to do it without drugs, as the hour approached I began to have second thoughts.

Your reminder about self practice pushed me over the edge and I committed to a drug-free procedure. Long story short, I sailed through it in 20 minutes. The doctor said it was the easiest ever, and the nurses were absolutely blown away. They are recommending me to teach an in-service at the hospital. (We will see about that.)

Thanks for the push. I needed it. I am on top of the world.

I look forward to connecting with you at the NGH conference.

Cheers,
Allan Doane

Self-Hypnosis for a NEW YEAR 0 (0)

Captain Ron Eslinger, USN, NC, Retired,  www.healthyvisions.com

If you are like most people you have probably noticed that you’ve already broken your New Year’s resolutions. What if I told you that the way you broke those resolutions and the way you continue with your unhealthy behaviors is the same process that will put you in control of being healthy, wealthy and wise?

Even though many people think that hypnosis is the work of the devil, witchcraft, voodoo and all other types of black magic; it may surprise you to know that every day of your life you are using hypnotic mind control to shape your own destinies, your own behaviors, and your own happiness.

We all go through the hypnagogic state as we are entering sleep. Most of us are in a trancelike state as we drive to work each day, not remembering the bridges, buildings, and intersections we actually drive by. How often do you daydream? Prayer, guided imagery, creative visualization and even watching TV is hypnosis by its definition of a focused concentration.

The thoughts that we have and the images that we create when doing all the above, praying, daydreaming, and driving, any of those things we do that places us in a focused concentrating state is hypnosis. Academics, clergy and the medical community have used other descriptions to describe hypnosis. However, as Shakespeare said, “a Rose by any other name is still a Rose”.

You can make your New Year’s resolutions permanent by understanding and doing the following;

First, you’ve got to get rid of your negative language. Words like I hope, if only, I wish, I can’t, I’ve tried everything, nothing works for me and all the other things you’ve learned to say about being overweight, being a smoker and even having chronic pain. You allow TV advertisements to hypnotize you every day into using the products advertised.

As an example on how to make your New Year’s resolution hypnotic, I will use weight management.

Start by, quit living in the past. Most people live today as if it was yesterday. What happened up until this time is no longer important, either physically or emotionally. It is what you do in the present, at this moment in time that changes the rest of your life and creates your future. Losing weight is the simplest thing in the world. All you have to do is, “eat less – move more”.

Your next move is to change your mind, which changes your brain, which changes your behavior towards overeating and under exercising. Simply stated, change your thoughts about who you are and how you eat. That simple act will change the chemical responses of your brain in an area called the limbic system. (You might want to Google that.) Those chemical responses in the brain send neurotransmitters to each and every cell of your body. With the right thoughts, the body will begin to respond in a healthy way.

Five simple thought processes will start you in the direction of being healthier, wealthier and wiser.

1. Repetition – A new positive affirmation aimed at your goal. You spent a lot of time saying, I’m fat, I can’t take these pounds off and I’ve tried everything. Stop those thoughts! Your new thought: I eat properly and sparingly and walk 20 minutes every day so that I look and feel my best. If looking your best is what you really want then saying that 100 times a day will be simple for you. However, the Chinese say that a picture is worth 1000 words. So don’t just say it – see it! Suggestions to yourself only become permanent with repetition. One of the reasons those New Year’s resolutions quit working is because we say them and then we forget about them.

2. Emotions – your mind and your body respond to every thought that you have about something that happened in the past as if it was happening in the present. You can demonstrate that to yourself by thinking about something that made you angry in the past and you will feel the anger again, or you can think about something that made you happy in the past and feel happy again. Think about eating a lemon. What happened? You probably started salivating and maybe even had a little discomfort in your jaw. Keep your emotions aimed towards what you want, and pretend that you have already achieved it. The subconscious brain takes its orders from the conscious mind and works at maintaining what the conscious mind believes. Example, if your goal is to be 130 pounds and you weigh every morning and the scale says you are 180 pounds, because of the repetition of seeing that 180 pounds the subconscious mind will work at maintaining that weight for you. Why, because you are showing it that, that is what you weigh and it is trying to maintain what you tell it you are.

3. Relaxation – when the mind is relaxed and the body relaxes with it the thoughts you have are not blocked as much by the conscious mind which is also known for its critical thinking. The thoughts and images you have go directly to the subconscious mind without being changed or blocked by the conscious mind which makes them much more powerful. So take a relaxing abdominal breath (free directions and audio can be found at www.healthyvisionshypnosis.com) and imagine you are the you that you have decided to be.

4. Concentration – when you concentrate during relaxation on your goal, your emotions begin to change toward confidence in achieving that goal. Repetition will make it become permanent.

5. Belief – for most people the simple belief that they can truly make a change in their life is unbelievable. We change our thoughts to truly believe that we can change the brain’s response to those thoughts and creates a change in those behaviors that have not allowed us to be the best person we can be. This includes all aspects of life. Losing weight, stopping smoking, controlling pain, managing stress and hundreds of other changes one would like to make in their life. See it, believe it, and achieve it.

We all use auto-hypnosis and self-hypnosis every day. Unfortunately, most of us are using it in a very negative way through thoughts and self-talk. Worry, is nothing more than negative self-hypnosis. Worry enlist all five processes above. When we worry we become obsessive about it and think about it all the time. It changes our emotions and our stress levels, which affects our heart and our digestive system through the emotions and the stress hormones that are created. We cannot relax and worry at the same time they are incompatible emotions. Worry is a very negative and powerful form of self-hypnosis that creates damaging hormonal changes throughout our body. Research has shown that “stress kills”.   You can control your stress by controlling your thinking.

Think Happy – Be Happy!

Think Yourself Thin 0 (0)

RON ESLINGER, RN, CRNA, MA, APN, BCH, CMI, FNCH

When I lecture I like to ask the class if they have ever been hypnotized.  Usually one or two will hold their hand up to indicate that they have.  I then say let me ask the question in a different way. “How many of you have ever been married?” If you held up your hand  then you have been hypnotized.  Next question, “How many have ever been divorced?” We call that self-hypnosis.” In the same way your thoughts get you married or divorced you can Think Yourself Thin.

Eighty Percent of the population is moderately too highly open to suggestions from others and from themselves. Suggestions we give ourselves are the most powerful. However, as they pass through the conscious mind, they are evaluated and influenced by our past experiences before being sent to the subconscious mind.  Which means if you have tried to lose weight before and didn’t your thought is that you can’t lose weight and the subconscious mind believes you and keeps you doing the things you been doing which keeps you over weight.

The subconscious mind does not reason, it takes every thought literally as a child would.  For example, when he was three I decided to teach my grandson how to hit a golf ball.  I got him the little plastic club and placed the ball on the ground in front of him and said, “keep your eye on the ball” with out hesitation he bent over picked up the ball and pressed it against his eye.”  An adult would evaluate the request and do through past experience what was expected.

The subconscious mind takes every thought as a truth whether real or not.  An example is when you think of eating a lemon your body responds as if you are eating the lemon – not thinking of eating a lemon.

So, if you tell your subconscious mind you are fat the subconscious mind works to keep you fat. Simply stated, we are what we think we are.  We become that which we see ourselves to be. Whatever the mind possesses the body expresses.  Therefore, change your mind and change your body.

To think yourself thin you must imagine yourself at your optimal weight eating the right foods in the right amounts and being physical active.

The simple fact is that our weight is determined by the amount of energy in calories that we take in compared to the amount of energy in calories that we burn.  When you burn more calories than you take in you lose weight.  To lose one pound you have to burn 3,500 more calories than you eat.

Think yourself thin:

  1. Continuously imagining yourself at your optimal weight.
  2. Eat Breakfast – People who do not eat breakfast will gain about 10 pounds a year.
  3. Eat something about every three hours in order to maintain metabolic rate.
  4. Drink 16 ounces of cool water when you get up and lose approximately 1 pound a month.
  5. Drink half your body weight in ounces of water each and every day.  Coffee and Colas are notwater.
  6. Take off 12 pounds a year by Not eating the equivalent of one cookie a day.
  7. Walk a brisk 20 minutes each day to lose 12 pounds per year.
  8. Do not diet! Do not weigh! You tried that already.  It does not work.
  9. Imagine yourself enjoying fresh fruits and vegetables at your optimal weight.
  10. Increase physical activity.  When shopping park at a distance from the store.  That short walk will make a great difference.

It is simple and it works so do it! Don’t try to do it

Extra Pounds in Mid-life Affect Later Mobility 0 (0)

I have done Hypnosis for Weight loss on a number of Clients for joint pain and to prepare them for their join replacement surgery.  Ron Eslinger

THURSDAY, April 9 (HealthDay News) — Seniors who were overweight or obese earlier in life are at increased risk for physical disabilities, even if they’ve shed the excess weight they had when they were younger, says a new U.S. study.

“In both men and women, being overweight or obese put them at greater risk of developing mobility limitations in old age, and the longer they had been overweight or obese, the greater the risk,” lead investigator Denise Houston, an expert on aging and nutrition and an assistant professor of gerontology at the School of Medicine at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, said in a center news release.

“We also found that, if you were of normal weight in old age but had previously been overweight or obese, you were at greater risk for mobility limitations,” she added.

Houston noted that weight loss later in life is usually caused by an underlying chronic condition.

The study included 2,845 participants who were an average of 74 years old when they were enrolled. They had no mobility problems at the start of the study. During seven years of follow-up, women who were overweight or obese (body mass index of 25 or greater) from their mid-20s to their 70s were nearly three times more likely to develop mobility problems than women who were normal weight throughout their lives. Overweight or obese men were 1.6 times more likely to develop mobility problems.

The researchers also found that women who were obese (BMI of 30 or greater) at age 50, but not in their 70s, were 2.7 times more likely to develop mobility limitations than women who weren’t obese throughout their lives. Men with a similar weight history were 1.8 times more likely to develop mobility problems.

The study is in the April 15 issue of the American Journal of Epidemiology.

Excess weight can put stress on joints, make exercise difficult, and lead to chronic conditions such as diabetes, arthritis and heart disease — all of which are directly related to the development of mobility problems, Houston said.

10 Simple Steps to lose 20, 30, 40 pounds in 12 months 0 (0)

Ron Eslinger, RN

Overweight/Obesity is a national public health crisis, and the problem is getting worse. Tennessee ranks number three in the fifty states for being overweight.   Unhealthy weight leads to a greater risk for several chronic diseases including heart disease and diabetes. Regular physical activity and good nutrition can help promote healthy weight and prevent chronic disease. Below are ten simple steps reduce your weight and add value to your life. You can look better, feel better, sleep better and be healthy.  How simple is it to lose weight?

Lose Weight in 10 Steps

  1. When you take in Less Calories than you eat YOU LOSE WEIGHT.  You can eat less and exercise the same and lose weight.  You can exercise more while eating the same as before and lose weight.  Best is to both exercise more and eat less to lose weight more quickly. If you burn more calories than you eat you WILL lose weight.
  2. Eat a light breakfast soon after waking.  Those who do not eat breakfast gain an average of 1 pound a year. If you had known that 10 years ago you would be 10 pounds lighter today.
  3. Eat 6 small meals daily or 3 meals and 3 healthy snacks.  This keeps your metabolism up and helps maintain healthy blood sugar levels. This will help you take off about 1 pound a month or 12 pounds a year and feel much more energetic.
